Economic and Security Cooperation Take Center Stage as UK PM Keir Starmer Visits India

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to embark on a pivotal two-day official visit to India on October 8-9, 2025, marking his first trip since assuming office. Invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the visit carries significant geopolitical and economic importance, particularly against the backdrop of shifting global dynamics. At the heart of this visit is the consolidation and expansion of India-UK relations through the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) signed earlier in July, which aims to propel bilateral trade towards a target of USD 120 billion by 2030.

 

Starmer’s itinerary includes critical bilateral talks with Prime Minister Modi to review progress on the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership guided by the ambitious ‘Vision 2035’ roadmap. This 10-year plan encompasses key development pillars such as trade and investment, technology and innovation, defence and security, climate and energy, health, education, and people-to-people relations. The strategic dialogue is expected to cover regulatory facilitation, trade barrier reduction, and enhanced collaboration in sectors like semiconductors, critical minerals, and defence co-development.

 

On the economic front, Prime Minister Starmer will engage directly with an extensive delegation of more than 100 British business leaders, academics, and cultural representatives, exploring opportunities unleashed by the CETA framework. Both leaders will participate in the 6th edition of the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai, focusing on innovations in fintech and digital infrastructure, highlighting the drive to foster technology partnerships.

 

Security cooperation, a crucial agenda, will see discussions on strengthening defence ties and joint innovation in advanced technology. The visit coincides with joint naval exercises, symbolizing robust military collaboration. Additionally, the leaders may address sensitive bilateral issues such as visa policies, migration, extradition requests, and security concerns linked to extremist activities, aiming to strengthen trust and cooperation.

 

Starmer’s visit not only builds on the momentum generated by Modi’s recent UK visit but also reflects a broader ambition to cement the India-UK relationship as a resilient, forward-looking partnership addressing global challenges while enhancing economic and strategic interests.
