Indian Railways has unveiled a revised national logo featuring 18 stars instead of 17 marking the formal launch of the South Coast Railway zone headquartered in Visakhapatnam. The new insignia will be used across the system from 1 June 2026 symbolising SCoR’s notification as the country’s eighteenth railway zone and a long pending Andhra Pradesh demand.
A subtle but historic design tweak is arriving on Indian Railways letterheads stations and locomotives. The Railway Board has approved an updated logo whose outer ring will now carry 18 red stars each representing one zonal railway in the country. The change coincides with the operational rollout of the new South Coast Railway zone in Andhra Pradesh from next month.
Eighteen Stars For Eighteen Zones
The revised Indian Railways emblem replaces the earlier 17 stars with 18 stars to reflect the addition of the South Coast Railway as the latest zonal unit.
A Railway Board communication circulated to all zones production units PSUs and training institutes directs that the new logo be adopted from 1 June 2026 across stationery signboards digital platforms publications and all other official uses.
South Coast Railway Finally Leaves The Station
South Coast Railway SCoR was first announced in the 2019 Union Budget to meet commitments under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014 and has now been formally notified as the 18th zone.
Headquartered in Visakhapatnam SCoR will become operational on 1 June 2026 managing around 3300 km of route length across Andhra Pradesh and parts of Telangana Tamil Nadu and Karnataka through the Guntakal Guntur Vijayawada and newly created Visakhapatnam divisions.
Political Context And Regional Stakes
The creation of SCoR follows years of negotiations and an Odisha Andhra tug of war over the revenue rich Waltair division which has now been split between the new Visakhapatnam division and Rayagada under East Coast Railway.
Leaders in Andhra Pradesh have hailed the zone as a long awaited step towards better rail infrastructure freight handling and passenger connectivity particularly along the state’s coastline and industrial corridors.
What Changes For Passengers And Operations
For passengers the most visible immediate change will be the 18 star logo appearing on tickets signage and digital interfaces while operational benefits are expected to come gradually through shorter decision chains and zone focused planning.
Railway officials say SCoR is designed to improve efficiency in train operations yard management and project execution in the region by giving Andhra centred routes a dedicated administrative command instead of splitting them between East Coast Railway and South Central Railway.
