Exclusive No More? UFO Moviez’s Appeal Could Set a New Stage for Competition in Film Tech

UFO Moviez India Ltd has been in the spotlight of a high-profile antitrust decision following the Competition Commission of India (CCI) issuance of monetary and non-monetary penalties for anti-competitive conduct in the digital cinema business. The CCI order, issued on April 16, 2025, held UFO Moviez, its subsidiary Scrabble Digital, and Qube Cinema Technologies liable for restrictive tie-in agreements and exclusive supply arrangements that stifled competition and restricted market entry by competing post-production service providers.

Key Highlights:

The CCI levied fines amounting to ₹2.69 crore—₹1.04 crore each on UFO Moviez and Scrabble Digital, and ₹1.65 crore on Qube Cinema Technologies.

The firms were found to have adopted lease agreements with the owners of cinema theatres (CTOs) that prevented CTOs from procuring content and post-production services from any other source except themselves, essentially shutting out competition in the DCI-compliant digital cinema equipment space.

The CCI ordered UFO Moviez and Qube to modify existing contracts and avoid making future agreements limiting content supply by third parties.

The probe followed complaints by film producer Ravinder Walia and PF Digital Media Services that UFO Moviez disabled leased equipment in order to bar screening of non-Scrabble Digital processed films.

UFO Moviez, maintaining its stance, asserts it possesses strong legal grounds to appeal the CCI’s order. The company is expected to challenge the findings, likely arguing that its agreements did not coerce CTOs or restrict fair market access, and that the CCI’s interpretation of tie-in arrangements and market dominance may be open to judicial review.

With the stage now set for a courtroom showdown, the verdict could well have wide-ranging consequences for competition and corporate conduct in India's rapidly evolving digital cinema sector.
