Seattle was recently treated to a vibrant celebration of India's most sought-after mangoes as the Consulate General of India, in association with APEDA, organized the "Flavors of Indian Mangoes" event. The event aimed at introducing the Pacific Northwest to the diversity, aroma, and sweetness of five of India's most celebrated varieties, ie, Dussehri, Chausa, Langra, Mallika, and Totapuri, and creating trade links and new business opportunities for Indian mango exporters.

A Flavour of India's Heritage

The carefully selected mango-tasting brought together top importers, invited guests, and notable visitors like Washington State Attorney General Nick Brown, Senator Manka Dhingra, and Seattle Port Commissioner Sam Cho. All the guests appreciated the unique profiles of each of the five showcased varieties, relishing their unique textures and flavors.

Industry experts discussed the mango's rich cultural past in India, and how it is not a fruit, but a symbol of family, celebration, and national pride.

Trade and Market Expansion

The event was part of India's overall strategy for the promotion of trade and followed a 19% growth in Indian mango exports to the US in 2024. America is one of the most significant growth markets, where increasingly demand is being generated for high-quality, original produce.

US retail managers and Indian exporters sat down to talk about boosting the quantity of Indian mangoes in the Pacific Northwest, with the dream of establishing them as a staple in neighborhood stores.

Community and Cultural Diplomacy

The mango exhibit was followed by an Indian Food Festival and Mango Promotion in Redmond, where the Indian American community and Washington State Representative Alex Ybarra attended. These meetings not only encouraged trade, but also helped in an exchange of culture, as the mango acted as a sweet ambassador for India's fertile agricultural past.
