From Blistering Heat to Breezy Nights: The Cool Roof Revolution in Gujarat’s Slums

As part of a global study to tackle extreme heat, “cool roofs” coated with reflective white paint have been installed for 400 slum households in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. This project builds on earlier trials in Ahmedabad that demonstrated significant benefits for vulnerable communities and is being led by epidemiologist Aditi Bunker and funded by the Wellcome Trust, aimed to reduce indoor temperatures by up to 2°C with the ultimate goal of improving residents' health and economic conditions. Participants observed cooler homes, better sleep, and lower electricity bills. The project is also exploring sustainable cooling solutions in other regions, including Burkina Faso and Mexico.
