From Diesel To Dynamic: India Converts 650-Ton Mining Excavator To 100% Electric

On April 20, 2026, LMEL unveiled the conversion of its giant mining excavator at an iron ore mine in central India. The project demonstrates India’s engineering capability to electrify heavy-duty machinery and signals a major step toward decarbonizing the mining sector.

The Conversion Project

The Liebherr R996 excavator, weighing around 600–650 tons and standing 12 meters tall, was retrofitted entirely by LMEL’s in-house engineering team. The diesel engine was replaced with advanced electric drive systems, redesigned power architecture, and safety controls. Despite the retrofit, the machine retains its massive 3,000 horsepower output, ensuring operational efficiency without emissions.

Significance For Mining Industry

Mining is traditionally dependent on diesel-powered equipment, contributing heavily to carbon emissions. By electrifying such a large excavator, India sets a precedent for sustainable mining practices.
