From Plumbing to Painting: Urban Company’s GST Bill Sparks Tax Authority Showdown

Urban Company Limited, the major player in home and professional services, has received a show cause notice (SCN) from the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI), Mumbai Zonal Unit, alleging contraventions under the CGST Act and IGST Act. The notice, dated September 27, 2025, demands payment of over INR 51 crore for the period April 2021 to March 2025, citing alleged non-payment of tax under Section 9(5) of the CGST Act 2017. Urban Company has been paying GST at 5% for services like plumbing, carpentry, electrician, and cleaning, classifying them under housekeeping services. However, the DGGI contends that this category should also include appliance repair, servicing, and painting, expanding the tax liability significantly.
