India’s flagship small borrower schemes, PM SVANidhi and PM Mudra Yojana, could see rising loan repayment stress if the West Asia war drags on and keeps global prices elevated. Street vendors, micro enterprises and first time entrepreneurs, who run on thin margins and volatile cash flows, are particularly vulnerable to another inflation and demand shock.

Policy makers and rating agencies are already flagging early signs of strain among small borrowers as banks turn more cautious on fresh disbursements. While FY26 balance sheets still look largely stable, experts warn that a prolonged conflict, higher oil prices and imported inflation could test the resilience of India’s informal and micro credit segment from FY27 onwards.

How War Linked Shocks Hit Tiny Borrowers

A sustained spike in crude, gas and fertiliser prices due to the West Asia war would raise transport, input and food costs at the street level. For PM SVANidhi street vendors and Mudra borrowers, that means higher working capital needs just to keep the same business running, even as their low income customers cut discretionary spending. This is a classic recipe for delayed EMIs and rising overdues.

Why PM SVANidhi And Mudra Are In The Spotlight

PM SVANidhi now has an extended lending window till March 2030 and enhanced ticket sizes up to ₹50,000, with new layers like interest subsidy, cashback and a UPI linked RuPay credit card. Mudra has already disbursed over ₹20 lakh crore since launch, with NPAs officially among the lowest for this segment. That sheer scale means even a modest uptick in stress could translate into a meaningful hit for lenders and the exchequer.

What Lenders And Government May Need To Do

Banks and NBFCs are already shifting to more structured, data driven monitoring of small ticket loans amid early warning signs from some micro borrowers. If the West Asia conflict keeps oil high and demand patchy, the Centre may need to consider targeted relief: temporary moratoriums, rescheduling, interest support or credit guarantee enhancements to prevent a wave of tiny defaults that could undo years of financial inclusion gains.
