Fruit Fit for Royalty: India’s Rs 3 Lakh Mango Takes the Crown, Setting New Luxury Record

The Miyazaki, popularly called the "Egg of the Sun," the costliest mango in the world, has set the news abuzz in India as it was successfully grown in some parts of the country, its price hitting a whopping Rs 3 lakh per kg. First created in Japan's Miyazaki Prefecture, the exotic mango is celebrated for its sheer ruby-red hue, silky texture, and extraordinary sweetness, which makes it a status symbol for fruit aficionados across the globe.

 

In India, Miyazaki mango has been cultivated in Bihar and West Bengal states. Notably, a Bihar farmer, Surendra Singh, had brought saplings from Japan and was able to yield 21 mangoes in his inaugural season, evoking interest among farmers in India to cultivate this exotic fruit. At the same time, a Miyazaki mango tree growing by a mosque in Birbhum district in West Bengal has become a favorite haunt, with the fruit selling for lakhs of rupees at auctions and the money going towards community development.

 

The mind-boggling price of the Miyazaki mango is all due to its rarity, intensive cultivation process, and relentless quality checking. Each fruit is hand-pollinated, wrapped separately, and meticulously cared for from the time it blooms, leading to a small yield of high-quality mangoes that fetch high prices both in Japan and elsewhere. In India, where locally produced fruits can cost more than Rs 2,000 a kilogram, high-grade Miyazaki mangoes have also fetched as much as Rs 3 lakh a kilogram, similar to their Japanese equivalents.
