The Finance Ministry has cautioned that the inflationary trend may resurface once again as fuel prices keep rising, the rupee depreciating and the risk of a below normal monsoon is looming. The rising prices of petrol, diesel and LPG, along with potential increases in food prices, could put a strain on both urban and rural budgets in the months ahead.

Why The Inflation Alarm Is Back

The economy is “cautiously resilient” but is now being hit by fresh price pressures due to high crude oil prices, a weak rupee and unpredictable weather, the government says in its latest monthly economic review. Retail inflation remains in check for now, but upstream costs and wholesale prices are increasing, which could lead to a possible pass-through to consumers.

The crude has rallied on the back of tensions in West Asia, putting pressure on the landed cost for India and reducing the buffer for oil marketing companies. The recent fuel price increases may have an immediate impact (higher travel expenses, LPG) and an indirect impact as transport and input costs increase the price of goods and services from vegetables to packaged foods in the coming months.

Monsoon Risk: From Fields To Fridge

The IMD has forecasted rainfall levels of about 92 per cent of the long period average, which is a genuine possibility of a below-average monsoon. A weaker monsoon can affect kharif production, water reservoirs and food inflation in cereals, pulses, fruits and vegetables – which is the basket that most severely impacts lower and middle income households.
