In 2025 at the Philanthropy Asia Summit, Bill Gates announced that the new office would be used as a regional collaboration hub for partnering with governments, philanthropies, and research institutions in this region due to Singapore's locational advantage and innovation cluster.

Strategic Step and Intention

Singapore will have its first Gates Foundation office in Southeast Asia and be the organization's 11th worldwide.
Backed by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), the office will be focused on increasing partnerships and accelerating achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The foundation will leverage Singapore's capabilities in healthcare, fintech, and AI to drive scaling of effective solutions across the region and world.

Areas of Focus and Collaboration

The office will focus on promoting global health, poverty reduction, and improving educational and economic empowerment.
Bill Gates highlighted the value of Asian innovation, especially in low-cost vaccines and frontier research, as central to future health advances.
The foundation intends to collaborate closely with local partners, such as Temasek Trust and Singaporean universities, to build innovation and capacity.

Leadership and Regional Impact

Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong spoke strongly in support, underlining potential areas for cooperation in clean energy, vaccine development, and technology.
The move is consistent with the foundation's long-term investment in Southeast Asia, focusing on strengthening the position of Singapore as a global center for philanthropy and innovation.

The Gates Foundation is meanwhile working on its legal and regulatory needs and will make staffing and operating plans when completed.
