Aamir Khan has firmly dismissed long standing rumours that he secretly “ghost directs” many of his films, insisting he has officially directed only Taare Zameen Par in a 38 year career. Speaking at a recent masterclass, he credited the hard work of writers, directors and every crew member, saying he has simply been privileged to learn from them.
Few Bollywood stars are as closely associated with perfectionism and creative control as Aamir Khan, which is partly why ghost directing whispers have followed him for years. At a Screen Academy Masterclass, the actor tackled the speculation head on. In a freewheeling session, he explained how deeply he gets involved in scripts and shoots while making it clear that directing is not something he has done from the shadows.
Only One Film As Director
Aamir began by reminding the audience that in nearly four decades of work, he has officially directed just one film, Taare Zameen Par.
“All the other films are not directed by me, no matter how much you all have been fed by the media,” he said, calling the idea that he secretly takes over projects “nonsense.”
“If I Am Doing It, Why Give Credit To Someone Else”
Challenging the logic behind the rumours, Aamir asked, “If I am doing a great job, why on earth will I put someone else’s name?” and then added with characteristic bite, “Pagal kutte ne kata hai mujhe?” to underline how absurd he finds the suggestion.
He stressed that the directors he has worked with are highly capable in their own right and that he has never felt the need to hide behind another person’s credit line.
“People Credit Me When I Have Done None Of That”
Khan pointed out that he is often praised for direction or writing on films where he was purely an actor and collaborator.
“I did not write Talaash, Rang De Basanti, or Taare Zameen Par,” he clarified, explaining that he simply heard those stories, connected with them and wanted to be part of them while others did the heavy lifting on script and direction.
“I Have Learnt So Much”
Rather than take undue credit, Aamir repeatedly highlighted how much he has absorbed from colleagues across departments.
“It has been my privilege to work with directors who are extremely talented and from whom I have learnt so much,” he said, adding that the final impact of any film is a collective achievement that includes writers, technicians, assistants and actors, not just the star on the poster.
Hands On Actor, Not Hidden Director
Industry watchers note that Aamir’s comments acknowledge his reputation as a hands on actor who gives intense creative inputs, while drawing a clear line between involvement and authorship.
By publicly crediting the “hard work of every crew member” and calling ghost directing talk baseless, he is also pushing back against a star centric narrative that often sidelines the contributions of writers and directors behind big hits.
