GMC Cracks Down on Roadside Storage of Construction Materials

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation has intensified its efforts to curb the storage of construction materials on roadsides and footpaths, enforcing strict regulations to minimize public inconvenience. Under the new directive, piling up building materials in public spaces between 6 AM and 10 PM is prohibited, with violators facing penalties.  

Officials have highlighted that the accumulation of construction materials contributes to traffic congestion and obstructs pedestrian movement. To address these concerns, GMC has imposed fines on businesses failing to comply with the restrictions. Recent enforcement actions saw penalties of Rs 7,000 and Rs 4,000 levied against two construction material dealers in the Hengrabari area.  

GMC Commissioner MN Dahal emphasized the importance of maintaining clear roads, noting that traffic congestion worsens throughout the day. He urged citizens to adhere to the designated time slots for material storage, allowing for smoother traffic flow and reducing environmental hazards caused by construction debris.  

To ensure compliance, GMC has introduced a dedicated WhatsApp number for residents to report violations. Authorities are also encouraging the use of tin sheets or similar barriers to prevent construction residues from entering drainage systems, which can lead to costly de-siltation efforts.  

With ongoing infrastructure projects across the city, including flyovers and highway expansions, GMC’s latest measures aim to strike a balance between development and public convenience. The corporation remains committed to fostering a cleaner and more organized urban environment.
