Government Refutes Jindal Nuclear's 18GWe Claim, Reaffirms 100GW Nuclear Target for 2047

The Indian government has dismissed reports of Jindal Nuclear announcing an 18GWe nuclear power capacity target by 2047. Instead, officials reaffirmed the nation's ambitious goal of achieving 100GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047, as previously announced. The current nuclear capacity stands at 8,180 MW, with plans to expand to 22,480 MW by 2031-32. This expansion includes the addition of ten indigenous 700 MW Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) in fleet mode. The government's commitment to nuclear energy is further evidenced by the recent Union Budget 2025-26, which positions nuclear power as a major pillar in India's clean energy transition.
