Green Revolution 2.0: Renewables Claim 92% of New Energy in Global Power Play

In an unprecedented and remarkable development for the global energy transition, renewable sources made up an astonishing 92.5% of all new power installations across the globe in 2024. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) announced this landmark statistic in its Renewable Capacity Statistics 2025 report, published today. The report also shows that 585 gigawatts (GW) of renewable capacity was commissioned in 2024, an increase of 15.1% year-on-year, which sets a new record. Solar energy distinguished itself, providing over three-quarters of this new capacity. Even with this progress, IRENA warns that we are still falling short of the rate of deployment for renewables needed to get to 11.2 terawatts by 2030, which is what we need to achieve global climate objectives. The report notes regional inequities too, with Asia—especially China—leading the way on new installations. IRENA's Director-General Francesco La Camera pointed to the economic and rapid deployment of renewables and stressed the need to have clear intentions for renewables in the governments’ climate plans.
