Hyderabad Police Educate Consumers On Spotting Chemically Ripened Mangoes
Public Advisory On Mango Safety
As mango season peaks, Hyderabad’s top cop has urged residents to stay vigilant against artificially ripened mangoes. Traders have been found using calcium carbide and ethylene sachets beyond permissible limits to accelerate ripening. These chemicals pose risks such as respiratory issues, neurological problems, and potential carcinogenic effects.
How To Identify Chemically Ripened Mangoes
Commissioner Sajjanar shared tips for consumers to distinguish naturally ripened mangoes from chemically treated ones. Artificially ripened mangoes often appear uniformly yellow but lack natural aroma. They may feel hard inside despite their bright skin and sometimes leave a burning sensation in the mouth. In contrast, naturally ripened mangoes have uneven coloring, a sweet fragrance, and softer pulp.
Police Raids And Enforcement
Over the past week, Hyderabad police and food safety officials raided godowns in Asif Nagar and Goshamahal, seizing nearly seven tonnes of mangoes treated with chemicals. Traders using “Diamond Ripe Ethylene” sachets in excess of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) limits were arrested. Authorities have warned that strict legal action will continue against violators.
Impact On Consumers And Businesses
While consumers face health risks, traders and wholesalers are under pressure as enforcement intensifies. Authorities emphasize that natural ripening methods, such as using straw or ethylene within permissible limits, are safe alternatives. The crackdown aims to protect public health while ensuring fair practices in Hyderabad’s bustling fruit markets.
