‘I Do’ to Bachelorhood: China’s Marriage Rate Hits Historic Low Amid Changing Priorities

In 2024, China experienced a significant 20% decline in marriage registrations, totaling just 6.1 million—the lowest number since records began in 1986. This sharp decrease from 7.7 million marriages in 2023 highlights a growing reluctance among young Chinese to marry, influenced by economic pressures, high living costs, and evolving personal values. Despite government incentives promoting marriage and childbirth, many youths prioritize personal independence over traditional family structures, posing significant challenges to policymakers aiming to address the nation's demographic concerns.
