Indian Immunologicals Limited (IIL) has pioneered a significant breakthrough in veterinary medicine by launching India’s first indigenously developed gE deleted DIVA (Differentiating Infected from Vaccinated Animals) Marker Vaccine to combat Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR). The vaccine, branded as Raksha-IBR™, was unveiled on September 27, 2025, at the diamond jubilee celebrations of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in Anand, Gujarat.

Understanding IBR And Its Impact

IBR is a contagious disease caused by Bovine Herpes Virus (BHV-1), primarily affecting the respiratory and reproductive systems of cattle.

Transmitted through aerosols and infected semen, it leads to significant reproductive failures such as abortions and infertility, alongside reduced milk productivity.

The disease has an incidence rate of over 32% in India with an estimated annual loss of ₹18,000 Crores due to decreased productivity.

Innovation And Benefits Of The Vaccine

Raksha-IBR™ is the first vaccine in India to feature a gE deleted gene, enabling differentiation between infected and vaccinated animals, a critical tool in disease control and eradication efforts.

The DIVA marker facilitates effective surveillance and helps in maintaining ‘IBR free’ status in herds, which is essential for international trade and biosecurity.

The vaccine has undergone extensive clinical trials demonstrating safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy lasting at least six months.
