India-France Collaboration Ignites 'Mini Sun' Fusion Project During PM Modi's Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inspected the ITER fusion reactor in Cadarache, France, on February 12, 2025, reaffirming India’s pivotal role in the €22 billion global initiative to replicate solar fusion on Earth. India, contributing ₹17,500 crore (10% of costs), secured full IP rights and delivered critical components like the 3,800-tonne cryostat—crafted by Larsen & Toubro. The reactor aims to generate 500 MW of clean energy by 2035 via hydrogen fusion, mirroring the Sun’s process. Modi highlighted India’s partnership with France in advancing carbon-free power, with ITER’s first plasma experiments slated for late 2025.
