India In Talks With Iran To Ensure Safe Passage Of Ships Through Hormuz

On April 20–21, 2026, the MEA announced that India is actively monitoring developments in West Asia and has raised concerns with Iran following maritime firing incidents. With several Indian vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring their safety has become a top priority.

Two Indian ships—VLCC Samnar Herald and Bulk Carrier Jag Arnav—reported firing incidents while crossing the Strait of Hormuz. Although no casualties were reported, the events prompted India to summon the Iranian ambassador and demand assurances for safe navigation.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that India has conveyed its concerns to Tehran and is working to guarantee uninterrupted and safe transit for Indian vessels. Ten ships have already crossed safely, while others remain in the region awaiting clearance.
