India Offers 13 CBM Blocks In 2026 Acreage Allocation To Diversify Energy Mix

On April 20, 2026, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced the latest CBM acreage allocation under the Special CBM Bid Round–2026. This marks a significant step in India’s push to harness unconventional energy sources.

Acreage Details

The bid round offers 13 CBM blocks covering 5,100 sq. km across sedimentary basins such as Bengal-Purnia, Pranhita-Godavari, and South Rewa. States involved include Jharkhand, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. 

Participation And Policy

Private sector companies including Reliance Industries Limited and Essar Group have shown interest in these allocations. The government has eased participation rules, with no prior oil and gas experience required, and introduced flexible exit options after completing mandated work programs. 

Strategic Importance

India holds 92 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of prognosticated CBM resources across 12 states, making it the fifth-largest coal reserve holder globally. Developing CBM is crucial for energy diversification, reducing LNG imports, and strengthening energy security.
