India Prepares for Over-Average March Temperatures: Challenging times for Agricultural Crops

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) released a forecast predicting that the nation will face above-average temperatures in March. The climatic abnormality is highly dangerous for winter crops, such as wheat, chickpeas, and rapeseed, which are susceptible to temperature variations during their critical growth stages.

Historically, high temperatures in February and March have negatively impacted wheat production. In 2022, a similar heatwave resulted in a sharp decline in wheat output, which led the government to impose export restrictions to maintain domestic supply. The forecast now threatens a possible repeat, which may require policy measures like cutting or removing the current 40% import duty on wheat to stabilize the market.

The expected temperature increase is not consistent throughout the nation. Parts of central, northern, southern, and northeastern India will have to experience the worst of the heat, with temperatures expected to skyrocket as much as 6 degrees above the season's average. This increase not only endangers crop harvests but also presents problems to water supplies and elevates the risk of heat sickness for susceptible communities. ​

To counter the impending energy needs fueled by rising temperatures, the government has extended the requirement for imported coal-fired power plants to run at full capacity until April's end. The move is intended to provide a continuous power supply since air conditioning use is anticipated to spike. ​

Farmers and agricultural community are requested to remain vigilant with the changing weather patterns and adopt adaptive strategies to reduce the probable losses. The IMD will remain closely monitoring the situation and issuing frequent updates to educate and prepare the public for the expected climatic adversity.​
