India Reflects on the Loss of Pope Francis

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed heartfelt sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, describing it as a profound loss for the global community. Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, passed away at the age of 88 in Vatican City on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025.  

Pope Francis was widely admired for his humility, service, and dedication to interfaith dialogue. His leadership focused on inclusivity and social justice, making him one of the most influential spiritual figures of the modern era. Throughout his tenure, he addressed pressing global challenges, including climate change, poverty, and conflicts, advocating for solutions that placed human dignity at the forefront.  

Prime Minister Modi, who had previously met Pope Francis during the G7 Summit in 2024, recalled their conversation about humanitarian efforts and global unity. He acknowledged the Pope’s commitment to serving humanity and had extended an invitation for him to visit India.  

The Vatican announced the Pope’s passing through Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who described him as a true disciple of Jesus and a champion of the marginalized. Tributes have poured in from leaders across the world, reflecting on his contributions to faith and society.  

Pope Francis’ legacy continues to inspire millions, and his teachings remain influential in shaping the principles of compassion and social responsibility worldwide.
