Indian Embassy in US Advises Against Impersonation Calls That Are Fraudulent

The Indian Embassy in the United States has released an advisory cautioning against scam calls posing as embassy representatives. The callers inform them that there are discrepancies in passports, visa applications, or immigration documents and ask for money to correct them, threatening deportation or imprisonment if they do not receive it. The scammers tend to spoof the phone number of the embassy (202-939-7000) or use its name to sound authentic. The embassy specified that it does not make such calls and any additional documentation requests are made through official emails from the @mea.gov.in email domain. The public is cautioned against entertaining such calls and divulging personal information. People can report such cases to the embassy through an email.
