Indian Flavors Take Center Stage At 2026 James Beard Awards With Top Nominations

The James Beard Foundation announced its 2026 Restaurant and Chef Awards finalists, with several Indian-origin chefs and restaurants making the prestigious list. Winners will be declared on June 15, 2026, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Outstanding Restaurateur Nominees

Srijith Gopinathan and Ayesha Thapar of Cal-India Collective were nominated for their leadership of restaurants including Ettan, Copra, Eylan, and Little Blue Door across California. Their work blends Indian flavors with California ingredients and contemporary presentation.

Meherwan and Molly Irani of the Chai Pani Restaurant Group also earned nominations. Their flagship Asheville restaurant, Chai Pani, won Outstanding Restaurant in 2022 and is celebrated for Indian street food and chaat.

Best New Restaurant Nominee

Tamba, located in Town Square Las Vegas, was named a finalist in the Best New Restaurant category. Led by Chef Anand Singh, Tamba combines traditional Indian cooking with live-fire techniques, coastal dishes, and modern plating.

Broader Recognition

The 2026 list highlights the growing acceptance of Indian flavors in mainstream U.S. dining. Alongside Indian nominees, Chef Suresh Sundas of Daru made history as the first Nepalese chef finalist in the Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic category.
