India’s Digital Public Infrastructure Projected To Contribute 4% Of GDP By 2030

NITI Aayog has released its strategic roadmap DPI@2047 for Viksit Bharat, outlining how India’s digital public infrastructure can transform economic growth. The report emphasizes decentralised, state-led initiatives and global collaboration to scale digital systems across sectors.

Current Contribution And Future Potential

India’s DPI, built on platforms like Aadhaar, UPI, Jan Dhan, GST, and FASTag, already contributes nearly 1% of GDP. By 2030, this figure could quadruple to 4%, driven by expanded adoption, AI integration, and sectoral digital transformation. 

DPI 2.0 Roadmap

The next phase, DPI 2.0, will focus on:

Decentralised execution led by states, with NITI Aayog as a catalyst.

Two-year iterative cycles: Year 1 for pilot projects in champion states, Year 2 for scaling successful models.

Global collaboration to build structured engagement models and resilience against external shocks. 

Strategic Importance

Chief Economic Adviser V. Anantha Nageswaran noted that DPI 2.0 will help India withstand geopolitical and economic shocks, such as disruptions in energy supply chains. Outgoing NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery emphasized that DPI must now move beyond inclusion to enable livelihoods, strengthen human capabilities, and unlock new growth engines.
