India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Train Set To Begin Operations On Jind-Sonipat Route

India’s railway sector is preparing for a historic milestone with the introduction of Daiana, the country’s first hydrogen-powered train. The project, developed by Northern Railway in collaboration with the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and Spanish partner Green H, reflects India’s commitment to sustainable mobility and modernization of its transport infrastructure.  

Key highlights from the announcement include  

• The train will operate on the 90-km Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to inaugurate the service on January 26, 2026.  
• Daiana is designed to carry 2,500 passengers, featuring eight passenger coaches and two driver power cars.  
• Powered by a dedicated green hydrogen plant in Jind, the facility has a storage capacity of 3,000 kilograms, making it the largest hydrogen plant in India.  
• The train will run at speeds between 110 and 140 kmph, reducing travel time on the route from two hours to just one hour.  
• Ticket prices are expected to be comparable to existing express services, ensuring accessibility while promoting eco-friendly travel.  
• The initiative aims to cut reliance on diesel traction, reduce pollution, and align with India’s broader climate goals.  
• Officials confirmed uninterrupted power supply has been secured for the hydrogen plant, ensuring smooth operations.
