India’s Green Energy Sector Faces Uncertainty Over Stricter Performance Standards

India aims to achieve 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, with wind and solar as key drivers. However, new regulatory proposals requiring stricter adherence to grid supply commitments have sparked concern among developers, who argue that weather-driven variability makes such penalties impractical.  

Regulatory Proposals  

CERC’s draft rules propose narrowing the permissible gap between committed and actual power supply from renewable plants. Deviations beyond the limit would attract higher charges, starting April 2026. The regulator argues this will improve grid stability and accountability.  

Industry Concerns  

Renewable energy producers and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) have urged a delay, citing unpredictable weather conditions that affect generation. They warn that stricter penalties could discourage small and medium firms, reduce investor confidence, and have a “catastrophic effect” on the sector.  

Court Intervention  

A Karnataka court has temporarily paused the implementation of stricter penalties after petitions from industry bodies. The court order allows companies to continue under the older payment system until further hearings, giving the sector breathing space.  

Future Outlook  

Experts suggest alternatives such as mandating energy storage in new projects and using advanced weather forecasting to set realistic limits. The final decision on stricter standards is expected later in 2026, after stakeholder consultations.
