India's Rural Poverty Plummets from 25.7% to 4.86% Over 12 Years

India has witnessed a significant reduction in rural poverty, with rates dropping from 25.7% in 2011-12 to 4.86% in 2023-24, according to a recent SBI Research report. This decline is attributed to increased consumption growth among the lowest income groups and substantial government support. Urban poverty also saw a decrease, falling from 4.6% to 4.09% during the same period. The report suggests that India's overall poverty rate now ranges between 4% and 4.5%, indicating minimal extreme poverty nationwide.
