India’s Stock Market: The Calm Eye in Trump’s Global Trade Storm

Indian equity markets survived President Trump's tariff about-turn with astonishing equanimity. Following a fierce global selloff precipitated by Trump's April 2 declaration of precipitous reciprocal tariffs, Indian exchanges initially fell vigorously, reflecting globally correlated peers. But the announcement on April 9 to impose a 90-day holdover on these tariffs has set a robust bounce on the way, with Sensex rising more than 1,300 points and Nifty mounting almost 2% on April 11.

Even as Trump's tariff reprieve leaves China out, the action has steadied global sentiment, favouring India. Experts point out that India's economy is one of the least touched by the trade tensions, supported by declining crude oil prices and the Reserve Bank of India's recent interest rate reduction. Domestic growth-associated sectors like banking and consumption are set to attract renewed investor attention.

India's smallcap and midcap indices also surged strongly, demonstrating confidence in domestically oriented businesses. In spite of ongoing doubts in global trade, experts are of the opinion that India has much to benefit from its aggressive trade negotiations with the U.S., with a view to achieving $500 billion bilateral trade by 2030.

While markets are processing Trump's tariff about-face, India stands out as a rock of stability in a high-volatility world.
