India's Urea Boost: Cabinet Clears Rs. 10,601 Crore Plant in Assam to Meet Rising Demand

The Union Cabinet has given its go-ahead for setting up a greenfield ammonia-urea plant at Namrup, Assam, at a cost of Rs. 10,601.40 crore. The project would increase domestic production of urea, especially in the northeastern region, and cover the increasing demand in states of Bihar, West Bengal, and Jharkhand. The plant will yield 12.7 lakh metric tonnes of urea every year and will be operational in 48 months. It will be energy-efficient and generate major employment opportunities, supporting India's vision of self-reliance in urea production.

The venture is collaborative, with a 40% share held by the Assam government and others like BVFCL, HURL, NFL, and Oil India Limited. The project has been viewed as a significant encouragement for the area's industrialization and agricultural development.
