McClay Leads Delegation To India For Landmark FTA Signing

The signing marks a historic milestone in bilateral relations, with McClay leading a cross-party delegation of MPs and over 30 Kiwi business representatives. The agreement is expected to boost trade, create jobs, and strengthen economic resilience for both nations.  

Tariff Reductions And Market Access  

The FTA provides duty-free access on 57% of New Zealand’s exports from day one, rising to 82% when fully implemented. Key beneficiaries include sheep meat, wool, forestry products, seafood, kiwifruit, apples, and wine. Indian exporters will also gain enhanced access to New Zealand markets, fostering balanced growth.  

Economic And Strategic Significance  

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon emphasized that the deal supports the country’s goal of doubling export value within 10 years. For India, the agreement strengthens its trade footprint in Oceania and aligns with national priorities of inclusive growth and global market integration.  

Diplomatic Engagements  

During his visit, McClay will also mark Anzac Day in New Delhi and co-host a New Zealand–India business summit with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. The delegation will later travel to Singapore for additional trade promotion activities.  

Future Outlook  

Analysts view the FTA as a “once-in-a-generation” opportunity, positioning both countries to benefit from tariff liberalization, services expansion, and stronger supply chain linkages. Parliamentary treaty examination in New Zealand will follow the signing.
