Mid-Air Drama: NY to Delhi Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Rome After Bomb Scare

An American Airlines flight from New York to New Delhi had an unscheduled stop in Rome on February 23, 2025, after a bomb threat during the journey. Flight AA292, with more than 280 passengers on board, changed course while crossing the Caspian Sea, prompting increased security protocols3. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner took off from JFK Airport at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday for its 14-hour routine flight to India's capital. But the plane had a dramatic turnaround over the Black Sea before approaching Rome4. The diversion to Rome, as opposed to making a landing at the closest airport, was possibly driven by the fact that American Airlines already has an operational base in the capital city of Italy, thus it would be easier to manage the security measures and passenger care. Their administrations will be opening an investigation on the source and authenticity of the threat.
