Monsoon Sneaks In Early, But El Niño May Steal The Show

Weather models suggest the southwest monsoon will show up a bit ahead of its usual time this year, offering early relief from the heat and some good news for farmers waiting to start sowing. At the same time, a brewing El Niño in the Pacific is raising concerns that, after a promising start, the rains may lose steam right when India needs them most. Monsoon Comes Early, Caution Comes With It

Meteorologists expect the monsoon to reach Kerala slightly before the standard June 1 date, which usually signals that the seasonal winds are setting up well and moisture is building over the subcontinent. For many parts of the country, that first spell of rain is what triggers land preparation, sowing and a general sense of “the season has begun.”

But the early onset headline doesn’t tell the whole story. Forecasters are already warning that El Niño conditions in the Pacific could start weakening the monsoon once we move into July and August, the two make-or-break months that deliver most of India’s annual rainfall. A season that starts strong on the calendar could still end up short on totals.

How El Niño Can Tilt The Rain Roulette

El Niño refers to an abnormal warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, which in turn disrupts global wind and moisture patterns. India has seen, time and again, that strong El Niño phases tend to drag down monsoon performance, sometimes quite sharply. Years with poor rains have often coincided with this phenomenon.

This time around, the key question is how intense and persistent El Niño becomes. A mild pattern might reduce rainfall slightly but keep things manageable. A stronger one could tilt large parts of the country toward a rainfall deficit, putting pressure on crops like rice, pulses, oilseeds, sugarcane and cotton, and forcing greater reliance on irrigation where available.
