In a new interview, Toshiaki Nomura was asked the question every photographer hears: are smartphone cameras now “good enough” to kill DSLRs and mirrorless systems? He praised how far smartphones have come for everyday users and casual creators, especially on social media and travel.

However, Nomura underlined that when it comes to critical work weddings, wildlife, sports, commercial shoots or high-end content creation professionals still demand what only dedicated cameras can offer: reliable autofocus, superior low-light performance, lens flexibility and robust build quality. For Canon, smartphones are expanding the photography funnel, not replacing it.

Nomura pointed out that professional and serious hobbyist demand remains strong in India, especially in segments like weddings, events, wildlife, studio and brand content. These users treat cameras as long-term investments, not gadgets to be swapped yearly.
