Mumbai’s Lifeline Gets Safer: First Closed-Door Non-AC Local Arrives

Mumbai’s suburban rail network, often called the city’s lifeline, has taken a major step toward modernization. The introduction of closed-door non-AC locals aims to address overcrowding and prevent accidents caused by passengers hanging at open doors, a long-standing safety concern.

Safety Upgrade

The closed-door system was introduced after the tragic Mumbra incident in June 2025, where five commuters lost their lives falling from overcrowded trains. Automatic doors will ensure passengers cannot travel on open doorways, significantly reducing fatalities and injuries.

Train Features

The new 12-car rake is built by ICF Chennai and fitted with an Automatic Door Closure System. It will undergo rigorous certification trials before being introduced into service by Central Railway. Ticket prices will remain affordable, with a Churchgate–Virar non-AC fare at ₹20 compared to ₹115 for AC locals.
