Mythos AI Sparks Alarm – Can Indian Banks Fortify Their Digital Walls Against Next-Gen Attacks?

India’s financial sector is facing a new frontier in cybersecurity. The AI model ‘Mythos,’ developed by Anthropic, has demonstrated the ability to identify and exploit vulnerabilities across major operating systems and browsers. While it offers defensive potential, its misuse could destabilize banking systems. The government has convened high-level meetings to address these risks.

What Is Mythos?

Mythos is part of Anthropic’s Claude family of AI models, designed for complex reasoning and vulnerability detection. Unlike traditional AI, it explains its outputs, making it a powerful diagnostic tool. However, this same reasoning capability can be weaponized by malicious actors to exploit financial infrastructure. 

Government’s Response

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, alongside IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, has urged banks to adopt pre-emptive cybersecurity measures. The Indian Banks’ Association (IBA), led by SBI Chairman Challa Srinivasulu Setty, has been tasked with coordinating defences. Banks are advised to:

• Enhance monitoring frameworks
• Report suspicious activity immediately to CERT-In
• Share real-time threat intelligence with regulators and peers 

Why Banks Are Vulnerable

Banks are prime targets because of their interconnected IT platforms that link corporates, retail users, and payment systems. A breach could disrupt UPI transactions and threaten financial stability. Experts stress that while India’s banking systems remain secure, vigilance is critical as AI-driven threats evolve. 

India’s Strategic Position

Despite the risks, experts believe India can leverage its large trained workforce and AI deployment capabilities to become a global hub for secure AI applications. By balancing defensive use of Mythos with strong firewalls, India could turn this challenge into an opportunity for leadership in digital defence.
