Kolkata’s long-pending New Garia–airport Metro corridor is moving ahead with authorities targeting a seamless one-hour ride between the southern suburbs and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport by around 2028, sharply easing road congestion and improving airport connectivity for daily commuters and flyers.

Kolkata’s Metro network is undergoing a major expansion, with the airport link emerging as a crucial piece of the city’s future transport map. Once fully operational, the New Garia–airport stretch on the Orange Line is expected to integrate with existing North–South and East–West corridors, enabling faster cross-city access for passengers.

The New Garia–airport corridor is being commissioned in phases, with services already running on initial stretches such as New Garia–Ruby and further extensions under way toward Sector V and Beleghata. Engineers and project officials indicate that missing links around key bottlenecks like Chingrighata and Kaikhali are likely to push full end-to-end completion to around 2028–2029, beyond the earlier official timelines.

Once the Orange Line connects New Garia directly to the airport, commuters will be able to complete the cross-city journey in roughly one hour, compared with significantly longer and less predictable road travel times today.
