Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his warm congratulations to Lee Jae-myung on his election as President of South Korea, marking a new chapter in the relationship between the two countries. Modi took to social media to express his optimism about working closely with President Lee, stating, “Look forward to working together to further expand and strengthen the India-ROK Special Strategic Partnership.”

Lee Jae-myung’s victory comes at a pivotal moment for South Korea, following months of political upheaval after the former president, Yoon Suk Yeol, was ousted in the wake of a failed martial law declaration. Lee, a former human rights lawyer who overcame a childhood of poverty and adversity, won the election with 49.3% of the vote—the highest turnout since 1997. He has pledged to restore democratic values and unite a deeply divided nation.

For India, Lee’s election is seen as an opportunity to deepen strategic, economic, and technological cooperation. The India-South Korea partnership already spans defense, trade, and innovation, and both leaders have signaled their intent to take this collaboration to the next level.

As Lee assumes office immediately, skipping the usual transition period, all eyes are on how his leadership will shape South Korea’s domestic recovery and its role in the Indo-Pacific. Modi’s message underscores India’s commitment to supporting South Korea’s democratic renewal and building a stronger bilateral relationship in the years ahead.
