A Game-Changer for Tatkal Bookings
Indian Railways will revolutionize Tatkal ticket reservations by making e-Aadhaar authentication mandatory. This step is an attempt to prevent abuse, provide greater transparency, and make sure genuine passengers receive equitable access to last-minute train tickets.

Why the Change?
Tatkal scheme, meant for urgent travel, has for years been marred by fictitious bookings using automated bots as well as bogus identities.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that e-Aadhaar authentication will be made mandatory for Tatkal ticket booking shortly, both online and at railway stations.

The move is likely to give preference to genuine travelers to block unauthorized agents from bulk-buying tickets.

How It Functions
Travelers will have to authenticate their IRCTC accounts with Aadhaar to book Tatkal tickets.

For the first 10 minutes of the Tatkal booking period, only Aadhaar-authenticated users can book tickets.

IRCTC-licensed agents will be barred from Tatkal ticket bookings in the initial period.

The system will link each ticket purchase to a valid Aadhaar ID digitally, providing identity-based access.

Impact on Travelers
The development is likely to make it more likely for actual passengers to get Tatkal tickets.

Indian Railways has already disabled more than 2.5 crore suspicious user IDs to block fraudulent bookings.

The effort goes with the overarching drive to modernize railway ticketing and enhance accessibility.

The Road Ahead
With e-Aadhaar authentication to be implemented by June 2025, travellers are advised to authenticate their IRCTC accounts to prevent booking disruptions. The new system is bound to make ticketing more efficient, cut down on fraud, and improve the overall travel experience for millions of rail commuters.
