The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is ramping up its fight against Aadhaar-related fraud with cutting-edge technological interventions and stricter verification protocols. This comprehensive approach aims to safeguard the integrity of India’s flagship biometric identity database.
Key Highlights: Stringent Anti-Fraud Measures
Restrictions on Changes: UIDAI is imposing limits on frequent updates to birth dates and biometric information. Any alterations to date of birth must align with original birth certificates verified directly through state databases, eliminating misuse of multiple birth documents.
Advanced AI and Machine Learning: Sophisticated algorithms detect fake or mismatched photographs, and invalid biometric combinations such as mixing fingerprints with footprints or those of other individuals. AI-driven age estimation software integrated into cameras ensures appropriate issuance—preventing adults from acquiring child-specific Aadhaar without biometrics.
Fully Online Application Process: UIDAI is transitioning Aadhaar applications to a completely digital form with source-based verification using authentic databases such as PAN, CBSE marksheets, and MGNREGA records. States are encouraged to provide verifiable online documents featuring QR codes to streamline authentication.
Limits on Biometric Updates: While acknowledging that elderly users may need occasional biometric updates due to fingerprint changes, UIDAI plans to restrict repetitive fingerprint updates, especially for younger individuals, to reduce fraudulent manipulation.
Verification and Rejection of Non-Citizen Applications: CIDAI mandates a minimum 180-day residency for foreign nationals before enrolment, enforcing proper categorization. Over 1,400 improper applications were rejected over six months.
Deactivation of Aadhaar Numbers for Deceased: Proactive deactivation of over 1.17 crore Aadhaar numbers linked to deceased individuals prevents misuse and identity theft.
These multifaceted reforms reflect UIDAI’s commitment to maintaining Aadhaar’s credibility as a secure identity platform essential for banking, welfare delivery, and various government services.
