Adani Group Partners With Bhutan To Develop 5,000 MW Of Hydropower, Strengthening Regional Energy Trade

The Adani Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation to develop 5,000 megawatts of hydropower projects, marking a significant step in regional energy cooperation. The agreement, signed in Thimphu, builds on the existing partnership for the Wangchhu Hydropower Project and aligns with Bhutan’s longterm renewable energy roadmap.
Strategic Partnership And Project Scope
The collaboration will focus on developing additional hydropower and pumped storage projects, with detailed project reports prepared for phased implementation.
Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation will hold a majority 51 percent stake in the Wangchhu Hydropower Project, while Adani will hold 49 percent.
The initiative supports Bhutan’s goal of achieving 20,000 megawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2040, reinforcing its role in the regional energy trade.
Energy Integration And Market Expansion
Adani will ensure reliable power offtake and integration with India’s commercial power markets, strengthening Bhutan’s position as a key energy exporter.
The partnership is backed by the Royal Government of Bhutan and the Government of India, highlighting the strategic importance of crossborder energy collaboration.
The Adani Group aims to expand its renewable energy portfolio, with its operating capacity expected to grow from 17.55 gigawatts to 30.67 gigawatts by 2030.
