Adani Power Limited has finalized the acquisition of Vidarbha Industries Power Limited (VIPL) for Rs 4,000 crore, following approval from the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). This move not only revives a key thermal asset in Maharashtra but also strengthens Adani Power’s ambitious growth trajectory toward a 30,670 MW capacity target by 2029-30.
Key Highlights
The NCLT’s Mumbai bench approved Adani Power’s resolution plan, allowing the company to acquire 100 percent of VIPL’s shares. The transaction is expected to close by July 17, 2025.
VIPL operates a 600 MW coal-based thermal power plant in Butibori, Nagpur. The plant, previously owned by Reliance Power, had entered insolvency due to loan defaults and operational challenges.
Adani Power’s acquisition plan includes a cash payment of Rs 4,000 crore, addressing VIPL’s admitted liabilities of over Rs 6,700 crore. The deal is part of a broader strategy to revive stressed power assets and expand Adani’s footprint in western India.
With this addition, Adani Power’s total operating capacity rises to 18,150 MW, reinforcing its position as India’s largest private thermal power producer.
The company’s roadmap involves a mix of organic expansions and further acquisitions, aiming to reach 30,670 MW by 2029-30. This includes ongoing projects in Raipur, Raigarh, and Mirzapur, as well as other brownfield and greenfield developments.
Adani Power’s expansion aligns with India’s rising electricity demand and the need for reliable base-load power, even as the country transitions toward greener energy sources.
Looking Ahead
The VIPL acquisition is a significant step in Adani Power’s growth story, offering operational scale, quicker project execution, and a stronger presence in Maharashtra. As the company pursues its 30,670 MW target, it continues to balance conventional and renewable energy investments to meet India’s evolving power needs.
