Gujarat is taking a big step to reduce school dropout rates by launching an AI-powered Early Warning System (EWS). This new approach, set to roll out on June 26, 2025, during the state’s school enrollment drive, will help identify students at risk of dropping out, especially in Classes 8 and 9.
The system works by analyzing student data from Vidya Samiksha Kendra (VSK), where each child in government-run and aided schools has a unique ID. By tracking attendance, grades, behavior, and other factors, AI can flag students who might be struggling. Once identified, teachers, school committees, and local authorities step in with targeted support to keep them engaged.
To make sure the program works, School Management Committees (SMCs) and Development Committees (SMDCs) will collaborate with parents and local communities to encourage regular attendance and better academic involvement.
The need for intervention is clear. Government records show Gujarat’s secondary school retention rate is just 44.3%, with dropouts at 16.7%. By using AI, the state hopes to change that, giving students the help they need before they decide to leave school.
