From March 28, 2025, Amazon will be ending the "Do Not Send Voice Recordings" feature on Echo devices, where all Alexa voice requests must be processed in the cloud. The transition, tied to the rollout of Alexa+, applies to devices like Echo Dot (4th Gen), Echo Show 10, and Echo Show 15. Users opting for the "Don't Save Recordings" option will have their voice data uploaded to Amazon servers but deleted upon processing.
The feature update accommodates AI generative features like Voice ID and personalized responses but raises privacy concerns. Critics point out that the move takes away from user control over data as past controversies indicate Amazon's handling of personal recordings. Amazon assures data protection and encryption, but many consumers are compelled to compromise on privacy to enjoy improved capability.
This shift has spurred debates on the balance between innovation and users' rights.
