After a deadly stampede at New Delhi Railway Station earlier this year, triggered by a surge of Maha Kumbh devotees, Indian Railways is implementing AI-driven crowd management systems. At 60 high-traffic stations, permanent holding zones are being constructed, guided by color-coded pathways and digital signage. AI algorithms will monitor crowd density and movement, helping authorities respond swiftly to potential crises.

Traditional maintenance routines are being replaced by predictive models. Sensors installed on trains and tracks collect data on vibration, temperature, and wear. AI algorithms analyze this data to detect early signs of failure—whether it’s a cracked rail, overheating brake, or misaligned wheel bearing. Maintenance teams can then intervene before breakdowns occur, reducing downtime and improving reliability.
 
Drones equipped with AI-powered cameras are also being used to inspect tracks and overhead power lines. These systems can identify cracks, vegetation overgrowth, or electrical faults with pinpoint accuracy.
 
Real-Time Tracking and Scheduling
AI is transforming how passengers experience train travel. GPS-enabled trains now feed real-time location data into centralized systems. AI analyzes this data alongside weather conditions and track congestion to predict arrival and departure times with remarkable accuracy. This not only improves passenger satisfaction but also optimizes freight logistics.

Passenger Experience and Security
Facial recognition systems powered by AI are being introduced at smart stations to streamline ticketing and enhance security. These systems can identify passengers, verify tickets, and detect suspicious behavior—all while reducing queues and wait times.
