A terrible accident struck Pune’s Maval area on Sunday afternoon when a bridge over the Indrayani River suddenly gave way. The collapse happened at Kundmala, a spot popular with tourists, and has left the community in shock.
Here’s what we know:
The bridge came down around 3:30 p.m. when it was packed with people, many there to enjoy the monsoon views. In a matter of seconds, dozens were thrown into the fast-moving river below.
So far, six people have been confirmed dead. Rescue teams have managed to save eight, but at least 25 others are still missing or feared to have been swept away by the strong currents. Two women are reportedly trapped under the debris.
The river was already swollen from heavy rains over the past two days, making rescue work even more dangerous and challenging.
The bridge itself was an old iron structure. Authorities had closed it a couple of months ago, but people kept using it, especially on weekends when the area gets busy.
Right now, NDRF teams, police, and firefighters are searching for survivors. Ambulances are lined up on the riverbank, ready to help anyone pulled from the water.
Local leaders are urging people to stay away from riverbanks and old bridges, especially during the monsoon.
This tragedy has raised serious questions about safety checks and maintenance of bridges in tourist spots, particularly during the rainy season.
