Taking a trail-blazing step towards blurring the lines between professional and academic qualifications, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has formally opened up credit transfer for ICAI (Institute of Chartered Accountants of India) courses. This is going to significantly benefit Chartered Accountancy (CA) students by making it easier for them to pursue their academics and reducing redundancy in studies.
What's New?
According to recommendations from its Standing Committee of Academic Council, IGNOU has approved mapping of ICAI courses with some of its commerce courses, including:
-
BCOMG
-
BCOMGOL
-
BCOMF
-
BCOMFOL
-
MCOM
-
MCOMOL
Students who passed relevant ICAI courses can now enjoy exemptions or credit transfer as per the Credit Transfer Policy of IGNOU. This means fewer duplicate subjects and faster academic progression.
Highlights:
-
One credit transfer allowed per course.
-
Credit validity: Up to 7 years since passing the ICAI course.
-
No course change or credit transfer fee under this program.
-
Processing fee: ₹500 for 16 credits or less, ₹1,000 for 16 credits or more (non-refundable)
This action is in sync with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes academic flexibility and inter-disciplinary learning. It also increases the academic value of professional qualifications like CA, making it easy for students to pursue dual degrees or postgraduate studies.
IGNOU has circulated the formal release and detailed course mapping (Annexures 1–3) in all its regional centers and placed it on its official website.
