The Union Home Ministry has clarified that caste enumeration will be conducted during the second phase of Census 2027, beginning in February 2027. The first phase, starting April 1, 2026, will focus on houselisting and housing data. The ministry dismissed claims of confusion, affirming transparency and continuity in census methodology.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has officially announced that caste enumeration will be carried out during the second phase of Census 2027. This clarification comes amid political debates and public speculation regarding the scope and timing of the caste census.

Key Highlights

The census will be conducted in two distinct phases. The first phase, beginning on April 1, 2026, will cover houselisting and housing data, including 33 notified questions on housing conditions, amenities, and household assets.
The second phase, scheduled for February 2027, will include the caste enumeration across the country. However, in snowbound regions and non-synchronous areas such as Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, this exercise will take place earlier in September 2026.
The MHA emphasized that the complete details of Census 2027 were released through a press note on December 12, 2025, ensuring transparency in the process.
The ministry strongly refuted opposition claims that the government was creating hurdles in conducting a caste census, stating that misinformation was being deliberately spread.
The census will follow established methodology, with caste enumeration forming a critical part of the second phase to ensure comprehensive demographic data.
