The UT Administration of Chandigarh has announced that free textbooks will be provided to all students from Class I to XII in government schools starting from the next academic session. Previously, this benefit was limited to students up to Class VIII, but the new initiative aims to support economically weaker students and reduce dropout rates in higher classes.

Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria has approved the proposal, which will benefit around 1.5 lakh students enrolled in 112 government schools across the city. The move is expected to encourage more parents to shift their children from private to government schools, particularly in Classes XI and XII.

Additionally, the administration has decided to prepare government school students for competitive exams, offering free coaching and guidance to students who score 85% or above in Class XII. The initiative aims to ensure that financial constraints do not hinder talented students from pursuing higher education and leadership roles.
